AI vs jobs: why the future has more work, not less

The layoff headlines are real, and so is the anxiety. But history and the best current data agree: AI will destroy some jobs, transform most, and create entire fields that do not exist yet. Robots that walk, data centers in orbit, and the biggest re-opening of opportunity in decades.

Yes, the layoffs are real. Say it honestly.

Nobody trusts an argument that skips the bad news, so here it is. Tracking site Layoffs.fyi counted over 150,000 tech workers laid off in 2024. Crunchbase counted about 127,000 more at US tech companies in 2025. In the first half of 2026, US employers announced 139,156 tech job cuts, up 83% on the year before, and for four straight months AI was the single most cited reason, named in over 100,000 announced cuts (Challenger, Gray and Christmas). Amazon, Oracle, Dell, Meta, Microsoft and PayPal have all announced five-digit or near-five-digit reductions while pointing at AI and automation.

So the fear is not irrational. What is irrational is stopping the story there, because the same period produced the fastest hiring boom in AI-adjacent work that India has ever seen, and because we have run this exact experiment before.

We have seen this movie, and it ends with more jobs

Most of today's jobs are new

MIT economist David Autor and colleagues traced every US job title from 1940 to 2018. More than 60% of the work people did in 2018 simply did not exist in 1940. New technology has always been the biggest job creator, not the biggest destroyer.

The ATM paradox

ATMs were supposed to kill the bank teller. Instead, US teller jobs rose from roughly 500,000 in 1980 to 600,000 by 2010. Machines made branches cheaper to run, so banks opened more branches. Automation changed the job, then multiplied it.

The radiologist that never vanished

In 2016 AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton said we should stop training radiologists. A decade later Mayo Clinic employs about 55% more radiologists than it did then, and the US has a shortage. AI reads scans; humans decide, and demand for both grew.

The economics behind this is not mysterious. Goldman Sachs estimated in 2023 that generative AI could lift global GDP by around 7%, roughly 7 trillion dollars, over a decade, and McKinsey put the annual value at 2.6 to 4.4 trillion dollars. Wealth that large does not sit still. It becomes new companies, new products, new industries, and those need people. PwC's 2025 Jobs Barometer, built on a billion job ads, found that even the occupations most exposed to AI grew 38% between 2019 and 2024, and revenue per employee is growing three times faster in the most AI-exposed industries.

This is the part that should genuinely excite you. Every platform shift mints new job families, and this one is minting them faster than any before it.

Robotics and humanoids

Goldman Sachs sees a 38 billion dollar humanoid market by 2035; Morgan Stanley projects 5 trillion dollars and a billion units by 2050. The jobs are already real: robot fleet operators, teleoperation specialists and robot trainers are live listings today, and India's Addverb plans its own humanoid launch.

Data centers in space

Solar panels in the right orbit produce up to 8 times more energy than on Earth, with no water needed for cooling. Google, Nvidia-backed Starcloud, the EU's ASCEND programme and lunar-storage startup Lonestar are all racing to build compute off the planet. Orbital infrastructure will need its own engineers, operators and analysts.

Synthetic biology and synthetic data

Writing DNA like code is an 18.9 billion dollar industry in 2025, projected by analysts to reach 69 billion dollars by 2033. Meanwhile the synthetic data market that feeds AI models is growing 35% a year. Both are spawning hybrid careers that mix biology, data and engineering.

The AI buildout on Earth

Hyperscalers spent about 380 billion dollars on AI infrastructure in 2025 and plan 660 billion plus for 2026. One US study expects data centers to create 4.7 million construction jobs and nearly 700,000 permanent operations roles. India's capacity jumps 30% in 2026 alone, and Google is building its first AI hub outside the US in Visakhapatnam with a 15 billion dollar investment.

Every one of those milestones creates work that had no name five years ago: orbital systems engineers, space datacenter operators, radiation-hardening specialists, ground-segment analysts. New infrastructure always becomes new employment. Follow the buildout and you find the jobs.

What this means in India, specifically

India is not a spectator in this shift. The government's IndiaAI Mission has committed over ₹10,000 crore and has already onboarded 38,000+ GPUs for public AI compute. Bain projects 2.3 million AI job openings in India by 2027 against only about 1.2 million available professionals, a gap of more than a million jobs waiting for people who skill up in time. Deloitte and Nasscom expect India's AI talent pool to double to 1.25 million by 2027, and the country's 1,700+ global capability centers already employ 1.9 million people, with over 500 GCCs running AI and machine learning practices.

The pay follows the gap. Research on nearly a thousand 2026 job postings found AI-skilled roles command a 20% premium at entry level, around ₹6 lakh against ₹5 lakh, widening to 38% for experienced professionals, around ₹36 lakh against ₹26 lakh for equivalent traditional IT roles. Prompt and context engineering roles in India now span roughly ₹5 to 6.6 lakh at entry and ₹18 to 35 lakh at senior levels according to Glassdoor and Indeed data. Skills that work with AI are the single clearest salary lever in the Indian market right now.

So what should you actually do?

The WEF survey puts it plainly: about 40% of the skills used on the job will change by 2030, and 59 out of every 100 workers will need reskilling. The people who lose in this transition are not the ones in "exposed" jobs. They are the ones who do not move. The winning stack for the next decade looks consistent across every report we read: data fluency (SQL, Excel, Python), an analytics or BI toolset (Power BI is the fastest-growing ask in Indian postings), working knowledge of AI tools in your domain, and the human skills machines complement rather than replace, judgment, communication and domain depth.

Questions people actually ask

Will AI take my IT job?

AI will take over tasks inside jobs faster than whole jobs. Goldman Sachs' analysis found that for most exposed occupations only a quarter to half of the workload is automatable. Roles that pair domain knowledge with AI tools are growing and pay more, so the practical risk is not AI itself but standing still while the job description changes.

If companies are firing because of AI, who is hiring?

The same economy, in different places. In H1 2026 US employers cited AI in about 100,000 announced cuts, while PwC's billion-ad study shows AI-skilled postings growing 7.5% a year in a shrinking overall market, with a 56% wage premium. In India, Bain expects 2.3 million AI openings by 2027 against 1.2 million candidates.

Which new fields are worth watching?

Robotics and humanoids, AI infrastructure on Earth and in orbit, synthetic biology, synthetic data, AI safety and evaluation, and AI-native roles like context engineering, MLOps and robot fleet operations. Each already has real listings, real funding and real market projections behind it.

Is a data or analytics career still safe to start in 2026?

Data skills are the entry ticket to almost every AI-era role. The WEF lists big data specialists and AI and machine learning specialists among the fastest-growing jobs to 2030, and analytics remains the most common first step into them from a non-CS background.
